Samsung, ever the innovator, has announced a new compact camera range that has two LCD screens.

The ST550 and ST500 compact cameras have a 'hidden' second 1.5-inch LCD on the front of the camera, so your group of mates can yell 'left a bit, right a bit' at you when you try and take a picture.

It will also be good for all those couples who for some reason are slightly uncomfortable asking strangers to take photos of them while embracing passionately.

The other LCD is a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen, which reportedly packs crystal-clear resolution.

The cameras both have a 12.2 megapixel sensor and a 27mm wide-angle Schneider Kreuznach lens with 4.6x optical zoom.

Another interesting feature the cameras have is something called Smart Gesture User Interface. This means that you can tap the camera or make a hand gesture to get it to perform certain tasks.

As you would expect, the ST550 and ST500 also features face recognition, image stabilisation and 720p video recording.

The ST500 is available in silver, red and blue colours and the ST550 is available in black, gold, orange and purple colours.

1.Evernote (Free)
This incredible app puts to shame the likes of Microsoft (only works if you have access to Exchange), Apple (needs Mobile Me, yuk) and Google (Notebook has been discontinued). Whatever platform – Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Blackberry, Pre, WinMob, Blackberry or just a browser – there's an Evernote client that will take written, pictoral or audio notes and sort them into searchable notebooks.

All local clients stay in sync with the cloud, so you keep filling pages and reading filed copy when you're offline, which makes it much more versatile than an online only option. The only thing it doesn't do brilliantly is ToDo lists and syncing with clients like Thunderbird, but since the basic version is free and all you need for most tasks, we can forgive it that.

2. Luminotes (Free)
Underneath the straightforward and elegant interface Luminotes works by writing your notebooks and notes to a personal wiki page. It's simple to use, though, and there's no need to resort to markup language – you wouldn't even know it's a wiki if it weren't mentioned on the homepage.

There's an web-based version of Luminotes and there are clients for Windows and Linux (with an OSX one on the way) but frustratingly no way to sync between them. Which means if you're working on an online notebook, it won't be accessible if you're out of data's reach.

3. Celtx ($50 per year)
The renaissance app of notetaking, Celtx is a professional program designed for multimedia production, but its advanced interface for storyboarding and layering notes within notes can easily be abused to make it capable of organising everything about your life. There's no Mac or mobile clients yet, and online syncing means subscribing to the five-user Studio service, so it's overkill for most, but great for starting out on a creative project.

4. Toodledo (Free)
Primarily designed for to do lists rather than notes per se, Toodledo's integrated notebook still does the job admirably well, although it doesn't have the clever audio note syncing and so on of Evernote. The only natively supported local client is an iPhone app, which costs £1.79, but there is a handy plug-in for Outlook available for Windows users and it uses iCal for publishing read only streams to the likes of Google Calendar and Mozilla's Sunbird/Lighting and OmniFocus on the Mac.

5. Ubernote (Free)
A close rival to Evernote, the Ajax-based Ubernote is fast and flexible. New notes can be updated by email, Firefox add-on, iGoogle gadget or Twitter, but the only way of viewing them offline is to download the entire notebook as a large, uneditable HTML file. No good if you need your research notes on that secluded Spanish writers' retreat then.

6. Corkboard (Free)
Taking the traditional push pin and paper as its leitmotif, Corkboard is a hybrid between an online notebook and Delicious or Tumblr. It's not the simplest way of keeping track of things and the web interface is noticeably slower than its rivals, but you can share any pertinent notes with the larger Corkboard community.

7. Zoho (Free)
Zoho is Google Apps with more muscle tone. It does everything Google doesn't including an excellent Notebook with a brilliant filing system and sticky-type visuals, if you want them. The only reason Zoho isn't among the finest here is that there's no offline mode for the Notebook yet, and it's not included in the pared down mobile interface either.

1. Stock.XCHNG
This fabulous site has a library of almost 400,000 images covering every topic, and is probably the best place to start your search for free images. Stock.XCHNG has a more complex image licence agreement than some of the competition, though, so read that carefully before you start.

2. Openphoto
It first appeared back in 1998, and so it's no surprise that Openphoto has now built up a solid collection of stock photos. They're neatly arranged into well-chosen categories, and clicking any of these leads on to a thumbnail gallery of related shots.

3. Stockvault.net
Stockvault has a small but very high quality collection of stock photos, as well as logo templates, clip arts, textures and backgrounds. It's the perfect site to find graphics for your website, then, but beware - Stockvault's images are free for personal, non-commercial use only.

4. Unprofound
This site has some great photos, with no significant restrictions on their use. You don't have to register to download images, and Unprofound is strictly non-profit, so you won't be hassled by the usual collection of annoying ads.

5. Free Media Goo
You can browse the tiny library at Free Media Goo in just a few minutes, and the images are relatively low resolution. There are some undeniably impressive photos, though, along with some handy textures and audio samples, and there's no need to register - just download anything that appeals.

6. Morguefile
This site's best feature is its excellent search tool. You can filter by categories, keywords, size, rating, even colour, so it's easy to bypass irrelevant shots and zoom in on the photos you need. Morguefile's licence is generous and no registration is required.

7. Pixel Perfect Digital
This interesting site includes over 4,000 stock photos, neatly organised in categories from Abstract and Animals to Places and Transportation. The best part of Pixel Perfect Digital is the collection of digital art and illustrations, though; stylish images that are hard to find elsewhere.

8. Image*After
Image*After didn't impress us with its conventional photos, but the more abstract efforts - everything from electronic components to brick walls and artistic blurs - are much more compelling, especially if you're looking for an unusual background image.

9. Freerange
The Freerange site search has an annoying habit of returning photos that have nothing to do with your keywords. But keep trying, and whether you're looking for animals or objects, people, places or arty, near abstract shots, you'll find a suitable high resolution shot here.

10. Free Digital Photos
There are just a few images here - searching for "cat", say, returns only 13 photos - and only the relatively low resolution (around 640 x 480) versions are free. Free Digital Photos requires a credit if you use one, too. It does have some excellent shots, though, and could be just what you need to spice up a personal website.

11. Free Photos Bank
The Free Photos Bank site provides a typical range of free photos - people, animals, landscapes and so on. They're better at abstract shots, though, backgrounds and digital artwork, so this is a good place to start looking for those more unusual images. There's no registration required so downloading is easy, whatever you're after.

12. Flickr
As the biggest photo sharing site on the web, used by some of the world's best photographers, your image search really isn't complete without a quick check of what Flickr has to offer. Not everyone allows their photos to be used commercially, though, so visit the Advanced Search Page, then check "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content" and any other licence-related options you need before you begin. And when you find a photo you like, check on the right-hand side for a link like "Some rights reserved", and click it for details on what you can - and can't - do with the shot.

In a move that we can only describe as worrying, Dell is beginning to roll out netbooks that have been branded specially for kids with a Nickelodeon computer the first through the madhouse door.

Dell is hoping that it can rejuvenate its brand and lure in the more discerning 'tween' customer by offering netbooks that appeal to the younger generation.

The so-far-unpriced Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition will come in Nick's green-slime design, is based on the Dell Inspiron Mini 10v, and is so far only announced for the US.

But with additional designs like SpongeBob Squarepants and apparently iCarly already on their way. It can only be a matter of time before kids on this side of the pond are being offered similar branding.

The default install enables files to be moved and copied locally, and plug-ins provide further functionality, such as integration with the Transmit FTP client.

Although initially a launcher, LaunchBar is now a fully-fledged productivity utility. HTC Releasing Three Android Phones In China

HTC will be bringing out three custom-tailored Android handsets for China by the end of the year.

The company will be working with Dopod to distribute the handsets, and it will be releasing the HTC Hero, the Magic, and a lower-cost handset known as the Click. All of the handsets will have to be tweaked to comply with China's standards.

The Hero was recently released in the European markets, and it's a high-end smartphone with a 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen. The handset will be compatible with China Unicom's WCDMA 3G standard, and it will reportedly support China's wireless LAN security protocols in order to maintain Wi-Fi.

HTC said it will have to remove Google Maps as an embedded application in order to receive government approval. Users will still be able to access this app through the mobile Web browser or download the program later.

The Magic is another touch-screen smartphone, and it is essentially a T-Mobile G1 without a keyboard. The handset will run China Mobile's Open Mobile System, which is the mobile operator's version of Android that has special branding and proprietary apps preloaded.

The Click is a low-end device that has not been offered in other countries yet, and it will have removable faceplates for personalization. The company said the 3G handset would be released in the fourth quarter for China Unicom, and it could eventually be released in other markets.

While the mobile industry as a whole is expected to dip this year, the Chinese market is becoming increasingly important for handset manufacturers due to the number of potential customers. China Mobile already has over 400 million subscribers, and there is still vast room for growth in the country.

The majority of subscribers in China use entry-level phones for making calls and sending text messages, but they are increasingly upgrading to sophisticated handsets that can play music, browse the mobile Web, and send e-mails. Apple has yet to officially sell the iPhone in China, but In-Stat estimates there are already about 400,000 unlocked iPhones in the country.

Gigabyte's netbook range comprises unique designs, and this can be particularly seen with the M1022 – also confusingly known as the Booktop.

The glossy white chassis weighs 1.4kg, and its smooth finish makes it easy to carry. The plastics used feel very sturdy to the touch, but the white finish inevitably attracts a great deal of dirt and smudges.

Unlike some rivals, the large 6-cell battery is neatly integrated into the main body. This helps maintain a clean look across the chassis, while also allowing the device to run for an impressive 360-minutes away from mains power.

Usability is excellent. Some punctuation keys on the keyboard have been made smaller to make room for the main keys, but the board moves with a smooth and quiet action. The touchpad is slightly less usable, however. Measuring 65 x 32mm, it is unusually wide. It also has its mouse buttons fitted on either side of the touchpad, rather than below it.

The 10.1-inch screen is more pleasing. Encased beneath a sheet of glossy plastic, it sits flush with the bezel. Brightness, colour and contrast are all excellent, although the glossy coating is extremely reflective – more so than many of its rivals.

A stylish docking station is included. The M1022 slots vertically into the plastic stand. A VGA-out port lets you connect to an external monitor and three USB ports and an Ethernet connection are in place.

An integrated HSDPA module provides wireless broadband internet access. The SIM card slots beneath the battery and is easily replaced. Strangely, DVD playback software is also installed, which is unusual for a device with no DVD drive.

On its own merits, the Gigabyte M1022 is a functional, if a little unremarkable, netbook. The inclusion of its docking station makes it far more usable and turns it into a neat little desktop replacement, so it's a great choice for working between the home and office.

1. Back up Gmail
Once you've been seduced by Gmail, it's easy to forget that your email is now inaccessible to you whenever you're offline. Plus, of course, there's no locally stored backup of your mail, however unlikely it is that Google will lose your mail.

If you're happy playing with the command line, and you want an unobtrusive way of backing up messages to your hard drive, check out LifeHacker's excellent guide.

2. Access Gmail offline
Alternatively, back up your Gmail and access it offline at the same time by using a compatible mail client, such as Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird – if you pick the latter, we recommend setting it up via IMAP, in which case you'll also need the Gmail Account Setup add-on.

Make sure your email client is configured to download the entire message and not just mail headers: in Thunderbird check the server settings of your Gmail account; in Windows Live Mail, right-click individual folders and check what's set under Synchronization Settings.

4. Preview video and photos

You can bypass this simply by renaming the file extension to TXT, but don't forget to tell your recipient what you've done, and remember you'll be breaking Google's codes of conduct, so don't make a habit of it.

10. Drag and drop
Fancy using all that spare capacity on your Gmail account as a back-up drive? Windows users should install Gmail Drive, while Mac users should check out gDisk instead.

11. Import mail into Gmail
You've got two options here, both of which require you to enable IMAP access in Gmail (under Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP). First, import – if necessary – your mailboxes into Thunderbird and then use Gmail Loader.

1. Bypass country restrictions
Can't access a YouTube video because of where you are? Try setting up a proxy server using a program like Proxy Way – once installed, just click ProxyWay Auto-Configuration to start, then manually delete all proxies that originate from outside the country you're trying to emulate (typically US). Once done, switch the proxy off and on before configuring your browser.

1. LastPass
The more we use LastPass the more we are impressed with it. It stores all your passwords as an encrypted file on LastPass' servers so they can be accessed from any machine using a browser add-on, web interface or the handy bookmarklets which you can drag to any browser's toolbar.

If that sounds worrying, fear not – they're stored using 256bit AES encryption and LastPass never holds the keys: when you log-in, the encrypted information is downloaded to your hard drive and only unlocked once there.

The default set-up isn't perfect, mind you, and the option to leave your browser logged-in to LastPass seems to defeat the point (as anyone who uses your machine will then be able to log into your sites just by visiting them). But configure it well and you can enjoy the automatic form filling feature as a brilliant way to prevent getting caught out by hardware or software keyloggers.

You get far more for free and in a better package than with many chargable password vaults, and for $1 a month, you can upgrade your account to include token security via an encrypted USB key too.

LastPass is available for almost every platform bar iPhone, but there is a mobile version of the website and it's possible to use the bookmarklets even on mini Safari. The only thing it lacks to be near perfect is third-party certification from one of the big security outfits – you have to take the privacy policy at face value.

2. KeePassX
A spin-off of the open source Windows-only KeePass project, KeePassX is a multiplatform vault which is a simple but secure desktop locker for all of your personal information.

If you leave it running in the background, like LastPass it will fill in forms for you so you don't have to keep copy and pasting character strings from its database. It doesn't sync with an online server, but does run off of a USB key so you can carry your logins with you wherever you go.

3. 1Password
An encrypted USB key is all well and good, but the phone is the one thing that never leaves our sides. Keeping your passwords encrypted on your iPhone isn't a bad idea at all, and 1Password is just one of many apps which can sync with a desktop version of itself.

It was given a tacit approval by Twitter CEO Evan Williams in a Twitter post on the subject of the email loss, but because it's MacOS only and has no online syncing, won't be practical for the majority of us.

4. Keeper
Of all the iPhone apps, we like Keeper best. It only uses 128bit AES encryption rather than 256bit, but the standalone app is free and could still take any potential hacker 13 billion years to brute force their way open.

There are Mac and PC versions available which will sync with the phone via USB for $14.95, but by itself it's a good backup to a service like LastPass. After all, where do you store the password for your single sign-on service? In a second vault, of course.

And if someone steals your phone they have just four attempts to crack the key to the Keeper vault before it completely self destructs.

5. Steganos Password Manager
One of the best known names for desktop encryption products, Steganos' Password Manager doesn't have online syncing like LastPass, but it does score over its rivals in the ingenuity of its master password creation.

You're not limited to text entry, and setting up a hardware key token using a USB drive, PDA or camera is simple and effective. Best of all, though, is the ability to use a series of pictures, rather than characters, to create passwords so secure, even you won't know what they are. Windows only, though.

6. eWallet
Very similar to Keeper and 1Password, eWallet syncs encrypted password data between a Windows PC and an iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile or Palm OS-based PDA or phone. Graphically it's very pretty, with pictures of credit cards for credit card details, and there's a web-syncing service currently in testing which will help to lift it above similarly featured rivals.

7. Firefox
If we haven't convinced you by now to create new, 20 character random passwords for everything that's important to you and use an encrypted vault (or two) to store them in, they we almost give up hope. Almost.

The very least you should do, though, is to encrypt all those website passwords your browser has stored – otherwise they're stored in plain text and anyone who uses your PC can find them just by looking in your browser's options menu. Lock them up in Firefox by going to Edit > Preferences > Security > Use a master password.

Adobe has revealed Flash compatibility is coming to more mobile OS platforms, although there was bad news on the iPhone front.

The company also promised compatibility with multi-touch and accelerometers, in the same way iPhone apps can make use of Apple's hardware.

This means that in the future applications could be made to work via mobile web browsers, rather than native to the hardware, meaning a lowering of developer costs.

How To Make iPhone Battery Last For Days

1. Keep it cool
Seriously. Don't put your phone in the sun. Don't leave it in a hot pocket. Battery life is lowered by heat and you should store your iPhone in temperatures less than 35 degrees centigrade – below 95F. As close to room temperature as possible is best for use.

2. Don't use power-sucking apps you don't need to
Minimise your app use, especially if it's a game, stuff that sucks data (hello, Facebook) or uses GPS. Not only does some of the fun stuff suck power, it can also stop the auto-lock coming on.

3. Turn off 3G
So there we were, in our field, with little data coverage (thanks O2). So what did we do? Turn off data, that's what. If you haven't got it, there's no point in wasting juice looking for it. Settings > General > Network and slide Enable 3G to Off.

4. No to EQ
Who'd have thunk, but equalising your iPod playback can drain your battery pack. Settings > iPod > EQ is where to turn it off.

5. Don't fetch
Set the common apps to only fetch data when you want them to. Set Mail, Contacts and Calendars to only fetch data Manually. BE WARNED - if you have MobileMe, it's dangerous to set the auto-check to Manual, since the much-vaunted Find My iPhone won't work.

6. Don't make long calls
Or don't make any calls. Sounds like the stupid filler tip, but if you do make calls (and you probably do, as that's almost certainly what you're conserving battery for), just keep 'em short.

7. Lock it up
iPhone not in use? Make sure you lock the screen and set the auto-lock to a minute in case you leave it unlocked.

8. Don't use the GPS
Minimise use of it (such as in Maps or turn-by-turn sat-nav) and disable it: Settings > General > Location Services. If you're lost, ignore this advice.

9. Turn it off when you don't need it
Sleeping? With all your mates anyway? Then turn your phone off. Bit pointless if it's for 10 minutes, but if it's hours, it will add up.

10. Disable Wi-Fi
Nowhere near a wireless network? Go to Settings and slide Wi-Fi- to off. However, if you are going to be doing a fair amount of data browsing and you are near a wireless network, it will be better for your battery to use this than the thirsty cellular signal.

11. Turn off Bluetooth
Likewise, make sure Bluetooth is off. And keep it there unless you use accessories: Settings > General > Bluetooth and slide Bluetooth to Off.

12. Push off
Not many apps use push notifications, but in the future this will have more of an effect on your iPhone's battery life as more start to. Settings > Notifications and slide Notifications to Off – only visible if you have relevant apps installed. Apple says this won't stop the apps receiving data when the app is actually open though, so be careful, unless you've disabled data in other ways. Equally you need to turn off push mail (MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange). Go to Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data and slide Push to Off.

13. Turn it down
Refrain from employing the speaker for music playback and turn down the volume - louder playback can make a difference, even with the headphones. Set the phone to silent on the side.

14. Dim your screen
Turn off auto-brightness and whack the brightness down as low as possible. Especially effective for many of us, as it's the supreme brightness that's one of the things that makes the iPhone screen look terrific, so it's usually very bright as a default.

15. Go airplane
If you've got very little coverage, you can't make calls anyway. If you're going to be in a coverage lowspot for a little while, turn on Airplane Mode. It makes a serious difference, since your handset won't be continuously searching for a network signal. This is one of the biggest drains of battery life on any handset.

YouTube has announced that following numerous requests from its users, it has doubled the maximum size of uploads from 1GB to 2GB.

YouTube product manager Ryan Junee, speaking on the official YouTube Blog, states that "the increase means you can upload longer videos at a higher resolution as well as large HD files directly from your camera".

Despite Junee's claims, we're dubious about the ability to upload longer videos, as the 10 minute duration limit remains in place.

Map An FTP Drive In Windows Vista

Mapping an FTP drive can be achieved using Internet Explorer or an FTP program. However, you can map an FTP drive in Windows Vista explorer. Below are the steps to achieve this:

1. Click on the Vista Orb

2. Type “explorer”

3. Click on “Computer"

4. Click on “Map Network Drive”

5. Select the drive you wan the FTP to map into

6. From there type the ftp folder in the text box (see image below)

7. You should not see the mapped ftp drive
